A Mom Makes An Autism Double Dare Dream Come True!

S.M.A.A.R.T.Mom
(Strong Mothers Altering Autism's Reality Together)

This year marked a very happy, yet sad occasion for us. I wanted  to give our son, Dustin (autistic) a 20th Birthday Dream I just know I HAD to make come true. A couple of years ago, I took Dustin here with our grand-daughter. Dustin Absolutely "ADORES" Nickelodeon , so to bring him to this Magical Place.....Well, I had just one moment that stuck with me....and that was it, I was a MOM ON A MISSION. No one intended on hurting Dustin's feelings, and he handled  the disappointment well...I mean "No Melt-Down." Anyway,  These things cost money and what I wanted to set up for Dustin, well let's just say it took me a couple of years. So, marking his 20th Birthday I created this "Magical Memory" we had at the Nickelodeon Hotel 2016'. SADLY,....Slime Time is No More :(
They closed it down shortly after we fortunately were able to experience this WONDERFUL PLACE! It has now been transformed into a super hero themed hotel.....However, for us, it won't come close in comparison to this Glorious Nickelodeon Double Dare Day. FYI: I put this video  on DVD for Dustin to watch.... I think he must really like it......He's on his 4th time watching....IN A ROW (LOL)

Grocery Shopping with Autism: Walk in S.M.A.A.R.T.Mom’s Shoes

Strong Mothers Altering Autism’s Reality Together
“Mothers Coming Together to Think Outside the Box of Autism Behaviors”
“Grocery Shopping with Autism: Come & Walk in S.M.A.A.R.T.Mom’s Shoes”
Thanks for joining me for a video that I am finally able to mend together. This Video “Time”Out” was initially created in Jan of 2011, however, even though my Dustin (autistic) has just recently turned 20 yrs old presently, I still use the chart to help get me through those dreaded grocery stores with My Dustin🙂
Jan.1, 2011: “I know I’m late getting this out to all of you Strong and Creative Moms; but unfortunately Boo bear has had some issues with ear infections again. But on the other hand I’ve finally found success in the Toilet Training area. No Dustin isn’t fully potty trained. I know most people just assume at 14 yrs old; he is. Well “P” came at the age of 7yrs. old. But the other……well like I said; “I’m 14yrs OVER it!” (LOL) Anyway, if you want to find out how I managed that one….you’ll have to come back and see me for January’s Mommy Time-Out. But for now here’s video where seeing is believing ;watch how S.M.A.A.R.T. Mom gets through the grocery store with Dustin having NO Melt-Downs AND still is able to get everything on her grocery list. Hope this helps you has much has it has helped us.”
Take Care.

An Autism 2016' 4th of July with S.M.A.A.R.T.Mom!

"Trying to Get Through Another Year"
by, S.M.A.A.R.T.Mom
(Strong Mothers Altering Autism's Reality Together)
Sorry for the delay  Happy 4th of July ! It's 2016'
Well here we go trying to get our Dustin once again to come outside to watch the Fireworks , which we are calling Disney Lights , so that it doesn't seem so scary to Dustin.
With most individuals who have autism, this holiday is far from exciting. It can be scary, upsetting, and cause a lot of anxiety. This is just one of the things on top of venturing in to public places that we've tried to help Dustin either over come or tolerate. He's come a long way from staying in his room hiding under his blankets while holding me and shaking to "Today" , where Dustin willingly goes outside and watches the display from inside our vehicle.
What may be baby steps to some of you , I rather consider them to be huge stepping stones to a much braver Dustin. As a mother , it has taken me about 15 years before I could actually watch the fireworks myself, rather than comforting my Dustin and missing every year's light show. So , if you are one of those Parents who missed the Lights this year because of those Autism Fears/Melt-Downs.....
This Video is especially for you! Here's to YOU , Your Brave son/daughter, and to a better 4th of July next year. Be patient, it'll come  We don't always have a good turn-out ourselves with Dustin who is 20yrs old this August. But, we will continue to "Try" and Always remain Hopeful. BIG HUGS! ‪#‎SMAARTMom‬ ‪#‎AutismWelcomedDecal‬

The Autism Welcomed Decal Find's a Permanent Home @ Threshold Dental!

The Autism Welcomed Decal Symbol has been given a Permanent home at Threshold Dental in Winter Park, Florida!
"Helping Families Living With Autism Feel Welcomed in Public Places"
(Opening Doors, Opening Hearts, & Creating Smiles!)

I want to Sincerely Thank Dr. Scott Simpson for the years of  service to our family ,especially. Since Dustin was much younger to present (age 19yrs) Dustin has had his good appts and sometimes, not so good appts. However, I still never stopped trying to continue bringing him to his dental check-ups. Over time each appt has become more successful than the one before . Just to Note: Although my son is 19 yrs old his mentality is more of a 3-5 yr old. He is what I call "Classic" Autism.  He is constantly Flapping, Jumping, and Repetitiously Babbling commercials / movies. He is not considered High functioning. I ALWAYS make sure when I take him ANYWHERE to bring anything that may comfort him. Favorite Plush Friends, drawings, DVD Player, etc. In addition to a reward system I created to help us get through more difficult places , such as the Dentist. YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD more than ANYONE. So with that in mind. Try to  Be Prepared Moms & Dads.
Lastly, Try to be calm and patient when you enter. If the staff isn't aware that you are with someone who has autism, let them know. IF the staff is aware...Don't get frustrated if possible. This does NO One any good. You know Autism isn't easy and you probably won't be the only one there trying to comfort an autistic. Give the  staff a chance to get to know your child/adult and YOU , before you pass judgement on a place. After all, it does take time to get to really know the actions & re-actions of someone who has autism. YOU KNOW THIS.  Keep in mind, We as Parents may not have had a CHOICE in regards to Autism. However, These people in the work field who "Help" us Care for our loved ones......They had a CHOICE. Yet, They still dared to venture into this very difficult field so that they could be there for US! So , I don't know about you, but I  have come to Value my son's Dentist and Dental Staff with all of my Heart. I hope you will too before you take your next visit to the Dentist. "Have you HUGGED Your Dentist Today?  I Have!"

Dustin's Nickelodeon Dream Come True!

Planned on taking Dustin back to Nickelodeon Hotel to celebrate his OMG! 20th Birthday August 1st, but had to bump up the date and do an early B-Day present when I found out that April 17th would be the last Day this Wonderful place would be open ;(  So I made Dustin a Nickelodeon Dream Come True. We started off with our very private and personal Sliming and I joined him too :) Then , we had Dinner with the TMNT, and to end our day WE WERE contestants on a LIVE Double Dare Show!
I had a lot of good cries, but  needless to say .... We Came, We Saw, And We Got Slimmed ! wink emoticon

These pics were from our private sliming!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So here are pics from our Double Dare Show experience!
FYI: Because this was supposed to be for Dustin's "20th" Birthday.... I don't plan on creating and sharing a video until August , although I have shared some brief preview videos already :)

Dustin and I were teamed up with a Father and son who were also big Nickelodeon fans :) Real nice and were Awesome Team Mates! They agreed to let Dustin come up with our Team Name (LOL) Dustin chose " TEAM NICK JR ". Dustin was so tickled when we came out on stage and this time, unlike earlier when we had our personal private slime......We came out from behind stage and the stage curtain with a live audience looking right at us!
HE WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZED!!! And Yep, I got misty (LOL)
Big Surprise (LOL) As if just being on the show wasn't over joyful for Dustin....THE RED TEAM/TEAM NICK JR.....WON!!!!! with 180 pts too! I had to become a human hot dog in the process, Dustin popped out of a Giant Gumball Machine, We got Slimed twice in a manner of hours, because we won were able to participate in the obstacle course, AND Dustin did OMG soooo well!
