(STRONG MOTHERS ALTERING AUTISM'S REALITY TOGETHER)
"Mothers Coming Together to Think Outside the Box of Autism Behaviors"
Thanks for joining me for January's Mommy Time-Out Video. So sorry again for the delay, but I've been a little under the weather . After 14 yrs of trying to fully potty train our son I have Finally found Success! Like any mom I've read many books, watched many videos, and so on regarding this subject; only to get no where but frustrated. But again I would sit down and ponder about what would give Boo Bear enough incentive to make him WANT to use the toilet. It did take him until he was 7yrs old to "P" in the potty; but making a "BM" well he just wasn't ready for that I guess. I knew he was ready though because he would either tell me he needed a depend pull-up or would just get one if he needed to go" BM". I tried all types of incentives: Elmo Cookies, treasure box toys, the $ store, and even cheetos. These were things I didn't give him on a regular basis or some not at all. So I thought this would be motivational. NOT!
So here it was just shortly before Christmas and I was once again trying to nip this in the Bud once and for all. Then it came to me....OMG! ToysRus. We don't hardly ever go there, they would have his videos, and or toys that he may want, and I already knew that one of the charities they support was Autism Speaks. ToysRus Supports Autism So I immediately went to my computer and came up with a New Incentive for Boo. I made up one card that he can see eveytime he sits on the potty.
It shows a picture of him on the potty with (First) underneath it and next to the picture is another picture that says (Poo in Potty = Toyrus Great Job Dustin). I kept a data chart to keep him engaged in the potty trials and whether he did or didn't he would get a sticker. BUT....if he Did a "BM" on the toilet he would get a Smily Sticker PLUS one Toysrus Coupon to put in a pocket I made up for him on a chart I created. I started with seven cards that were placed on the board and numbered. Then each number had a box under it which would be covered by a Toysrus Coupon. To make him feel really special I wrote something in the boxes to praise him for his great job. He just loved that! After he earned his 7th coupon we go to Toysrus either that day or the next; NO LATER. It didn't take long for him to catch on, so of course who can go to Toysrus all the time, right? So this time I altered the Potty Chart to show 14 Toysrus Coupons to earn. It did take him longer, and he even stalled out for two days (No "BM" at all) But once I went over the chart again trying to reassure him that he can still earn the coupons; he got right back on track. So if this happens, hang in there and stay on task. Be patient but you have to stick to the data and chart. Routine is very important. And most of all......Overly applaud your BIG Boy or Girl. For me that was absolutly NO problem....14yrs is a long time to wait. I have kept detailed data since Dec 21st and I'm very happy to say that exactly one month after that on Jan 21st Boo Bear finally had a "BM" on the potty at School! Yeah! I hope this helps anyone who has been trying to fully toilet train their son or daughter with autism. If you would like to talk to me more about this or have ANY questions please email me and I will be more than happy to help you has much as I can. In the mean time I hope this works for you like it has for me:)
